Desenvolver
5.Learning outcomes of the curricular unit
To problematize the concept
of art analyzing several artistic expressions (from late 19th century onwards),
in order to foster aesthetically grounded reading competencies. To develop
intersemiotic readings between visual art works and other texts, using as a
framing device the topics Love, Money, Nature, and Politics.

7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the
curricular unit's objectives
With the aim of defining the concept of art and
questioning its sociocultural purposes, both at an individual and at a
collective level, we will consider works of art by artists of several
nationalities, made in different mediums,
in order to delineate the path from (pre)modernism to present-day artistic
practices. This plurality will be related through analytic topics — inclusive
and (hopefully) relevant in the students’ experiential contexts — that operate
at a(n) (inter)subjective level and also at more encompassing dimensions, such
as ecology, politics, and finances. The students will therefore be able to
develop aesthetic competences at the service of an activist reading of the
world.
as competências discursivas (orais e escritas) e a criatividade (nomeadamente
8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)
I will propose a working
calendar, so that students may prepare their readings beforehand and contribute
to the discussion of the theoretical texts, in dialogue with the art works
under consideration. Throughout the semester, students will produce brief
written texts and work in smaller groups to have peer feedback and/or to
prepare short oral presentations to the class. We will frequently visit sites
about contemporary art and sites of museums and/or art galleries that have
reproductions of the works of the artists studied. The objective is to
stimulate dialogue, intellectual autonomy, (written and oral) discursive
competencies, and creativity (namely through the invitation to develop creative
works).
Assessment criteria: Attendance (5%);
Collaboration in class (discussion/text production) and in the blog (15%); Creative research project and oral
presentation in an open class model (25%); Essay (25%); Written test (30%).
The School of Life) e do crítico de arte John Armstrong, que argumentam a favor
9.Demonstration of the coherence between the
teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes
Throughout the semester, we will build a collaborative
knowledge, based upon the dialogue that takes place during the classes and in
the blog, an archive and a forum. In our first meeting, I will share the work
calendar defining the texts we will consider, so that students may assume responsibility
for their learning and contribute to the ongoing collective debates. The
diversity of bibliographical resources aims at amplifying the students’ analytical
potentialities and to strengthen the links between their life-experience and
their academic competencies.
Students will elaborate short written texts in class
and they will also have the opportunity to develop two projects: a research
project that will lead to the production of an essay comparing the work of two
of the artists included in the syllabus; a creative project, backed up by a
critical reflection. The professor will supervise students in tutorials and
their texts and posts will get syntactic, orthographic, semantic,
and structural feedback (cohesion, coherence, informational
sequentialization). The open-book test includes the comment of one of the theoretical texts
studied in class and the analysis of a work authored by one of the artists
studied.
Our approach will be guided by the book Art as Therapy, by the philosopher Alain
de Botton (co-founder of The School of Life) and the art critic John Armstrong,
who argue for the conception of art as a tool with therapeutic functions (in
the widest sense of the word), in contrast with the modernist vision that
disconnects the aesthetic, phenomenological and political domains. Our
objective will hence be to consider the function that art can fulfill in the
individual and collective life, empowering students as creative agents.
